The roofs of Cudworth

Cudworth sits on the ridge north-east of Barnsley and is one of the borough's largest post-war estate areas, with homes built in the 1940s, 50s and 60s spreading out from an older core of terraces along Barnsley Road. Most of the estate housing was roofed in concrete interlocking tiles on bitumen felt, and much of it has never been re-covered. The tiles are now sixty to seventy-five years old and the felt beneath them is brittle.

The older terraces around the centre and towards the Dorothy Hyman stadium have slate roofs and brick chimneys of the same age as those in Wombwell and Barnsley itself. Across all of it, the commonest problems we see are failed ridge and verge mortar, slipped tiles after wind, gutters that no longer fall to the outlet, and flat garage roofs at the end of their life.
