New roofs and re-roofing in Barnsley
Roofline replaces pitched roofs across Barnsley, from Victorian terraces to post-war semis and modern detached homes. New battens, breathable membrane, the covering you choose and a ridge fixed to current standards, with a free itemised quote before anything starts.

A complete new roof, not just new tiles
A proper re-roof replaces everything that has worn out, not just what you can see from the street. We strip the old covering, inspect and repair the timbers, fit new treated battens and a breathable membrane, then lay the new covering with every tile or slate fixed as the standard requires. Ridges, hips and verges are mechanically fixed or dry-fixed so they will not be back for re-bedding in five years.
Barnsley has a huge stock of homes built between 1919 and 1964 whose original roofs are now at the end of their life. Many were covered once in concrete interlocking tiles and have never been touched since. If yours is one of them, a new roof is a once-in-a-lifetime job and worth doing well.

When a re-roof beats another repair
Repairs are the right answer for most roofs. These are the signs the covering itself has run out of life.
- The roof is original on a house built before 1965
- Tile surfaces are flaking or crumbling (delamination)
- Several slates slip every winter, a sign of nail fatigue
- The underfelt is brittle, torn or hanging out at the eaves
- You have paid for the same area to be patched more than once
- The ridge and verge mortar has failed along its length
- The roof sags between rafters or along the ridge
- Loft insulation is wet after heavy rain
- You are planning a loft conversion or solar panels
New roofs and re-roofing: your questions
How long does a new roof take?
A full re-roof on a Barnsley terrace usually takes three to five working days once the scaffold is up. A three-bed semi takes four to seven days and a large detached house five to ten. Weather can stretch that, and we will always tell you if it does.
Do I need to move out while the roof is done?
No. You can stay in the house throughout. There will be noise during the day and the loft will be off limits, but the roof is sheeted up every night and the house stays weather-tight.
Do I have to add insulation when I re-roof?
Often, yes. Under Approved Document L of the Building Regulations, re-covering most of a roof counts as renovating a thermal element, and the insulation should be brought up to current standards where it is practical and cost-effective. It is usually a straightforward addition of loft insulation, and we deal with the Building Control notification. Read our Building Regulations guide.
Can I change from slate to concrete tiles, or from concrete to slate?
You can, but concrete tiles are much heavier than slate, so a slate roof that is changed to concrete needs a structural check of the rafters first. Going the other way is lighter and rarely a problem structurally, though the roof pitch has to suit slate. In a conservation area or on a listed building the covering may need to stay as it is.
