A chimney stack takes weather from every direction and has more joints, junctions and changes of material than any other part of the roof. Why is my chimney breast damp when I do not use the fire?
Usually one of four things: failed flashing letting rain in at the roof line, cracked flaunching letting water down the flue, porous brickwork soaking up rain, or condensation inside a flue that has been sealed at the bottom with no ventilation at the top. A look from the roof usually tells us which. Roofline fixes all four.
Can you remove my chimney completely?
Yes. Removing the stack above the roof and tiling over is a common job and does not normally need planning permission unless the house is listed or in a conservation area. Removing the chimney breast inside the house is structural work that needs Building Regulations approval and support for what is left above.
How long does a chimney rebuild take?
Repointing a stack is usually a day. Rebuilding above the roof line takes two to three days including new flashings, plus the scaffold. Capping a redundant stack is a half-day job.
