Hoyland sits on the high ground south of Barnsley with Hoyland Common to the west and Elsecar down the hill to the east. It has a bit of everything the borough's housing offers: stone and brick terraces from the nineteenth century around the town centre and Market Street, inter-war semis along the main roads, post-war estates, and newer development filling the gaps. Elsecar, a conservation area and the site of the Elsecar Heritage Centre, has some of the most carefully preserved industrial housing in South Yorkshire.
