The roofs of Wombwell

Wombwell grew fast with the pits in the second half of the nineteenth century and again with the council estates after the war, and its roofs tell that story. The streets around the centre and the station are rows of brick terraces, most originally roofed in Welsh slate with a chimney stack on every party wall and an outrigger at the back. The estates that spread out towards Hemingfield and the Dearne in the 1950s and 60s are concrete interlocking tiles on simple gable roofs, most of them still on their first covering.

Both types are now at the age where the fixings, felt and battens give out even when the covering looks sound. Slate roofs slip because the nails have rusted. Post-war tile roofs delaminate and grow moss. Neither is an emergency, but both reward a proper look before winter.
