Why mortar keeps failing, and what replaced it
For a century, ridge tiles were bedded in sand and cement and the verges were pointed with the same. It never worked well in Yorkshire weather. Mortar shrinks as it cures, the roof moves, frost gets in, and within a few winters the ridge is cracked and tiles are rattling in the wind. Then someone re-beds it and the cycle starts again.
In 2014 the British Standard for slating and tiling, BS 5534, changed to require ridge and hip tiles to be mechanically fixed. Mortar alone is no longer an acceptable fixing. Dry fix systems do the job with screws, clips and a ventilated roll or unit, and they are what Roofline fits as standard.

The ridge is the highest, windiest part of the roof. It is the first place to look after a storm.

Why did my mortar ridge fail again after being re-bedded?
Because mortar is not a fixing. It has no give, so as the roof moves and the mortar dries and shrinks it cracks, and once cracked it holds water that freezes and breaks it further. Re-bedding restarts the clock without fixing the cause. A dry ridge, or ridge tiles screwed and clamped to the batten, does not depend on mortar at all.
Do dry ridge systems look ugly?
Modern systems are discreet. The ridge tiles are the same tiles, and the roll beneath them is colour-matched and largely hidden. Dry verge units are shaped to the tile profile and come in colours to match. From the ground most people cannot tell the difference, except that the ridge line stays straight.
Can you dry-fix just the verges?
Yes. Verges on the gable ends are the commonest place for mortar to fail on Barnsley semis and it is a straightforward job to remove the mortar and clip on dry verge units, usually in a day with a tower.
