The roofs of Goldthorpe

Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and Bolton upon Dearne are the borough's Dearne Valley towns, built to house the miners of the big collieries of the early twentieth century. The result is dense streets of brick terraces, much of it built between 1900 and 1930, along with later estates of colliery and council housing from the 1940s onward and regeneration development in recent years.

The terraces were roofed in slate or early clay and concrete tile, with a chimney stack on every party wall, and a great many are still on their original coverings. Nail fatigue on slate, failed ridge mortar, tired chimneys with cracked flaunching and leaking lead are the everyday work in the Dearne. On the post-war estates it is the same story as elsewhere in the borough: concrete tiles and felt at the end of their life, and gutters and fascias that have not been touched in decades.
